Biography

Steven Chan, D.D.S., of Fremont has been appointed to the Dental Board of California by Governor Jerry Brown in October, 2016. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1978. He completed a general practice residency followed by a pediatric dental residency at Martin Luther King Jr/Los Angeles County Hospital. He has been in private practice limited to pediatric dentistry in Fremont, CA since 1981. Dr. Chan is a past President of the California Dental Association and has served as Vice Chair on five of CDA’s for profit subsidiary companies and as a member of its political action committee. He is founder of the California Dental Association Foundation. He served on the policy-making American Dental Association House of Delegates for 18 years. He serves on the Investment Oversight Committee of the American Dental Association Foundation.

Dr. Chan further served as President of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He served additional leadership roles on the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry and as a member on Councils of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Chan completed a leadership curriculum at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. He later chaired a subcommittee on the Alameda County Civil Grand Jury investigating government bodies. He also Chaired an appointed Citizen’s Committee which oversaw the building of a new campus for Ohlone Community College (Fremont). Dr. Chan completed a tenure on the American College of Dentists, this country’s honor society for the profession – as President. He serves as President of the ACD Foundation. The American College of Dentists is the national honor society for dentistry. Only 3.5% of dentists have been so honored into this organization. He has served on the Medical Staff at Washington Hospital Healthcare System(Fremont) for over 30 years. He and his wife Suzanne are credited with starting the Washington Hospital Community Health Resource Library. Dr, Chan has also served on the medical staff of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital (Fremont).

He was formerly a Clinical Staff Instructor at Children’s Hospital (Oakland) and an Adjunct Clinical Instructor with the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Chan and his wife Suzanne (former Vice Mayor of Fremont) live in Fremont.
They have two sons who are successful entrepreneurs.
