Advanced Strategies for the Care of Patients With Special Needs

Audience: Dentists, Students & Residents, Dental Auxiliaries &Dental Office Staff

Course Summary:
Care of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) is a core component of a Pediatric Dentist’s Skill-set. Dr. De Bord and Nelson will discuss treatment approaches for this population that are practical and patient-centered. In this session you will learn:

  • Differences between the medical model and social model of disability
  • Oral health disparities encountered by people with disabilities
  • Appropriate dental care goals for CSHCN
  • Treatment approaches for CSHCN including, sensory adapted dental environments, desensitization, deferred treatment, and sedation
  • When is the appropriate time to provide care in the operating room
  • Care transition from an interdisciplinary perspective
